INT. THE BEDROOM
Madi’s room. Late afternoon. Movers are heard outside. Freddie (25) sits at the end of Madi’s bed. Madi (19) sits against the headboard reading Sybil. She is in pjs and an oversized t-shirt.

FREDDIE
You're crazy.

Madi doesn’t look up from her book

MADI
Oh? What makes you say that?

FREDDIE
Just look at you.

MADI
[glaring] I do not appreciate that.

FREDDIE
Struck a cord, did I? [laughs]

MADI
No, I just don't adhere well to stupidity, Fredrick. You of all people should know that.

MADI goes back to reading. FREDDIE’s right hand jolts to his chest and he gripped his shirt.

FREDDIE
Why do you hurt me so?!

FREDDIE throws himself on his back on the bed. Groaning, he writhes on the bed holding his chest. MADI continues to read, untouched by FREDDIES's theatrics. After a few Simon lay still. He and MADI sit in silence, neither stirring.

MADI
Finished?

FREDDIE
[closes his eyes. Whispers.] I never began.

Silence.

FREDDIE
When did you stop?

MADI
Excuse me?

FREDDIE
When did you stop?

MADI
Ok, I’ll bite. Stop what?

FREDDIE
When did you stop being fun?

MADI
What do you mean I stopped being fun?

FREDDIE
You know what I mean.

MADI
Who thinks I'm not fun?!

FREDDIE
I do.

MADI
Do you now? Well, why don't you imagine I'm just as fun as you remember?

FREDDIE
Because, I can't, Madi.

There is an awkward silence. The movers from down the way are heard taking furniture out of the truck. MADI places her book on her nightstand. She lays down next to FREDDIE and stares up.

MADI
I'm sorry. I didn't mean it, and you know that.

Together they turn their heads to look at one another. Catching his eye MADI smiles weakly.

Freddie:
Whatever happened to us? We were once so close.

Madi:
We still are. You are very much a part of who I am, Freddie.

MADI reaches over, taking his hand in her's. Lovingly, she squeezed it. Sings.

MADI
Oh, you're the best friend that I ever had.

FREDDIE
Been with you such a long time.

MADI
You're my sunshine.

FREDDIE and MADI
And I want you to know that my feelings are true, I really love you.

MADI
Oh....you're my best friend.

FREDDIE
You're something else. Using the words of Queen against me.

Madi:
Not against. I just had to prove my point. Who better then the man you were named after? Besides, you know it's true.

FREDDIE
Yes, I know. But it goes both ways. You have affected me to the point that I wouldn't be who I am if it weren't for you.

MADI:
[whisper] Let's stay like this forever.

FREDDIE
We very well may. But people change. It is not up to you or I to decide.

MADI
Well that's encouraging.

FREDDIE
[laughs] You know it's truth. But we have known one another for as long as I can remember and you have yet to get tired of me.

FREDDIE closes his eyes and takes in the smell of MADI.

MADI
[Under her breath] I never will.

FREDDIE
Besides, even if you do get tired for me, I'll still be here.
MADI
Oh?

FREDDIE
Yes, to protect you.

MADI
Do you think something is going to happen to me?

MADI yawns then giggles. FREDDIE just lays there.]

MADI
Freddie.

MADI opens her eyes to look at him. FREDDIE's thin lips form a smile. His left hand runs through MADI's hair behind her right ear. Placing his hand on her face and neck he brings MADI closer. His thumb strokes her cheek. Then slowly, he draws himself to her face and gently kisses her forehead. MADI sighs. A black cat jumps up onto the bed and settles down between MADI and FREDDIE. The cat purrs quietly.

FREDDIE
I have to go.

FREDDIE rolls off the bed and makes his way to the door. MADI props herself up.

MADI
Freddie....

FREDDIE stops right outside the bedroom door. Turning his head just enough to see her, he grins sweetly before walking out of sight. MADI sighs and relaxes back down onto the bed. The movers outside are heard closing the back door of their truck. The truck starts up and drives off down the street. The cat purrs louder. MADI looks up and pets it affectionately. LAURA’s voice is heard from downstairs.]
